I'm very, very afraid of the dark. If I'm in my room during a storm and all of the lights go out, my breathing gets faster, my heart races, I fidget and stumble across my room until I finally reach the lightswitch . Oh, and I'm a 20 year old female.

I've always been extremely paranoid about the dark. I thought my phobia of spiders was bad, but this has escalated into an (embarassingly) horrible problem. I always picture myself walking into some kind of monster or murderer, stepping on something and falling on my face, etc. I've been like this for as long as I can remember.

You can get therapy that may help.

I suggest you get nightlights for the house. You can get ones with sensors in them so they only come on when it's dark. You can even get emergency lighting, they plug into the wall and come on if the power goes out.

You can carry a small flashlight on your key ring too.

You have a problem with anxiety, its not that uncommon. There is a lot of help and support, you should start addressing this now as it will get worse the longer you leave it. Get a counsellor, try nlp or similar techniques, talk to your doctor to get contacts for a group, make sure you have a trusted friend you can rely upon for support, read books on anxiety, try different things. I have a similar kind of personality and have learnt what the triggers are for my anxieties and phobias and I now have an anxiety free life as I've learnt to manage it but i wish i'd know sooner what the problem was. There are things you can do but i recommend you start now before the problems become bigger or lead to panic attacks or other anxiety problems.

well, I'm in my 40s and still afraid of the dark, I sleep with a night light. And I'm extremely afraid of all types of bees etc.( my heart beats faster) when I see one I drop everything and run into the house. My husband says " you saw a bee, didn't you". when ou lights go out my son always hunt down the flash lights for me, and comes to find me. I live with this and I still do.

i had the same problem and it may sound stupid to you but hear me out. i turned it over to God. i prayed about it a lot. i am not a very religious person but after so many years of being afraid to breath in the dark for fear of whatever was there with me hearing me and coming to get me i had to do something. i do believe in God and i think you have to for Him to help you. and you have to believe that He will help you. my hubby started working nights and i have a young son, i was so afraid of the dark i couldn't get out of bed to go to him if he cried in the night when my hubby was gone. i had to leave lights on due to this. i got a great big dog and that helped with part of it. now my man drives over the road and is gone for a week at a time sometimes and i am fine!! i can even go into our pitch dark basement at night alone now. before i wouldn't have even tried because i would have peed my pants or died of a heart attack!! please try this. if you don't know how to pray click on my name at left and e-mail me. i'd be glad to help!!

I am very afraid of the dark too. I imagine ghosts and strang men when its dark. I sleep with my tv on and have flashlights in every room. You can call me crazy but our fear is real. I have no advice for you because I have not gotten over my fear but I can say my flashligths and tv work wonders.

I can be the same way. I live with my boyfriend now so I have him to protect me. I would get a little nightlight and maybe have one in the hall to the bathroom and kitchen if need be. Also try what everyone else said face your fear. If you are real scared maybe ask your dr what you can do for it.

I overcame the some thing with hypnosis. Maybe this could help you, too. You can also try EMDR. Good luck.
