If the US is a country free from religious persuasion in our laws. It states in the Constitution that the government shouldn't promote one religion above any other. So please explain why gay marriage should be illegal. Please cite your references and back up your information. Remember that religious answers are unacceptable because the government can't promote your religious views.

Canada is a heck of a lot more liberal than the US, eh. You guys also have fresh air and a great health care programme.

Marriage is not a soley religious institution. It was not created by your god. It started as a property arrangement. It's pre Christian and Pre Historic. Which means if any religion can claim it, the Pagans can.

I'm a Wiccan Reverend authorized to marry people and I would gladly marry men and women or women and women or men and men as long as both parties consent.

I think God put Gay people on earth to insure that there would be people who have a very good sense of color coordination. And also that the rest of us should learn to be tolerant. If gay folks want to be as unhappy as the rest of us, go for it.

By the way, if you really wanted to protect marriage, you would have to make divorce illegal.

Sorry bluefirewitch, I don't think anybody has given you an honest or even understandable answer! I don't see how exploring the European countries can give us an estimation of how our country would be with legalized gay marriage, and this issue will never be over, ever. There are too many closed minded people in this country.

I support Gay Marriage, and I have an argument for every negative comment anybody can say against it. Gay marriage would not destroy the sanctity of marriage, DIVORCE destroys the sanctity of marriage. Outlaw divorce, then whine about Homosexuals. And if the Courts actually allow the bigoted politicians to force an Anti-Gay Marriage ban, then the world will know that our country is hypocritical. In fact, most of them already do know that, and hate us as much for that as for our culture domination.

This sounds cliche, but its true, the more we stand divided, the easier prey we become. Not that i'm all terrified of a terrorist attack, but that it would make us more prone to a larger attack in the future simply because we weren't paying enough attention. Kind of like the Twin Towers! Who doesn't notice that the planes turned the wrong direction off the runway? Who doesn't notice a billion things that went wrong that day....but then again, here we are squabling about who's allowed to marry whom...

Sounds like our priorities are right on track now, doesn't it?

I,m not from the U.S but in the U.K gay marriage is legal and I say why the hell not? why should someone be denied the same rights as others based on there sexuality, does this in some way mean that love is not as good between gay couples as heterosexual couples -- don,t think so. ultimately people will sit there and say the bible says it,s wrong, WHAT A COP OUT people do not have the ability to discuss with an open mind this issue so they retreat behind meaningless cliches from a 2000 year old book or there local minister/priest.

That's actually not what the Constitution says. It says freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. The only thing Jefferson meant was that there would not be ONE national religion. Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, and even some atheists oppose gay marriage. It is a moral issue, not relegated to any one religion. It's not the same as telling someone to pray to Allah 5 x a day. Actually, religious opinions are just as valid as non-religious ones, but to look at it from another angle...

Gays have higher rates of AIDS, STD's, depression, alcohol, drugs, and sexual child abuse than straights. Heterosexual marriage shows couples living longer, and creates order in society. Gay marriage does just the the opposite, and will cost a fortune in health insurance to the country...

I don't think Gay marriage should be banned from the states. The Government should allow couples to be married in city hall etc. Government should have nothing to do with religion and vice versa. But, marriage is an institution created by God. It belongs solely to God. People get married in church for God's Blessing. Otherwise they could just get married in the street. And since gay marriage is something detestable to God, I don't think he would bless the marriage. But as free citizens, you can do what you like. Just keep it out of church, and keep the church out of the government.

And why didnt you mention Canada? Gay marriage is legal here, and it has nothing to do with religion. In fact the religions are fighting it and want the law repealed.

I hope the Harper government stays firm on this and KEEPS religion out of government - something that Bush is clearly NOT doing.

(as per Bush's law that says "faith based" agencies will get money ONLY if they do not promote abortion.)

To me it's a non-issue but I think it's amusing how some gay people think that being married is some sort of advantage. Ask around and see how many married people wish they weren't. Try to imagine how many people stay in unhappy marriages because they can't afford to divorce and lose the house.

If gays want a taste of what it's REALLY like to be married I'd say let them. And when they're sleeping in the car because their spouse got a restraining order they can remember that they asked for it.

The thing is marriage is NOT a right, it is a privilege. Marriage in the US is for a man and a woman. If you are not sexually interested in the opposite sex, then you forfeit the privilege to marry. Gays have the RIGHT to vote, bear arms, speak freely, practice their religion freely, etc. just like every other American. Nowhere in the Constitution does it state you have the right to be married, regardless of sexual orientation. Gays have every right granted in the Constitution, and again, marriage is not a right.

The divorce rate in America is about 65-35.I don't think that people who get married should argue this issue at all seeing how,65% are getting divorced as fast as they get married. So what's the problem? Ignorance.Peace!

Its not just the religious that are against it. There are still many many non-religious homophobes out there. And both religious and non-religious homophobes reside in our nation's government. I agree with you.
