Good answers already above. One other thing to consider is adding sugar or corn syrup to the water. I saw a show some time ago and it's not just about the sticky rice, it's about sticky SWEET rice that is the key to successful sushi.

Actually, I think it was one of Ming Sai's shows.

Good luck! I hope you have some VERY VERY fresh fish.

Regular long grain rice will not work for sushi. It needs to be a japanese short grain or the sushi will fall apart. I tried using Thai sticky rice when I was out of sushi rice once, the results were edible and the sushi held together but I wouldn't do it again. There really is no good substitute.

Obviously sticky rice is best, but when I learned to make sushi we made it with shortgrain rice and then added vinegar and a heck of a lot of sugar. I cannot remember the exact quantities to do it that way. You would have to look in a book or on a web site. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

ordinary rice will fall apart when you make in into sushi. ordinary rice can be made sticky but the rice won't form well.

sticky rice or glutinous rice is most suitable because the if you cook it properly the rice will be nice and oval while being sticky enough to shaped by hand

from one sushi fanatic to another, I hate it when I dip my sushi in the soy sauce and the rice gets soggy an falls into the dish and I only have half of the original rice. I suggest that you keep making sushi with the traditional sticky rice, the sugar and vinegar also add to the flavor of the dish.

It is just not the same, you should buy some sticky rice from the store, it's not too expensive and it makes all the difference.

You've got to use the sushi rice. It just won't work otherwise.

you could mix in a teaspoon of starch (maizena flour) into the water. it'll make your rice sticky.
