human psychology! if it is 299 instead of 300...our mind feels some satisfaction that the purchase ws done in the range of 200 and nt 300...and we tend to buy it thinking tht it is a great deal failing to realise tht it is only a matter of one rupee difference.

secondly in most of the cases the one rupee change is not given back either. so the seller has an advantage of a rupee in every purchase!

There has been talk of deleting the penny from our currency. At this point it takes more than a penny to create a penny. Some lawmakers are trying to pass bills to eliminate the penny but I don't think it will happen for reasons stated above. It's all psychological. I personally laugh when stores advertise the "less than $500" product that they are selling for $499.99. At some point in life we move past the price and start looking at other things; customer service, warranty and quality of product.

Because it catches people's attention instead of "300" they put "299" so that it looks less price. For instance if something is $49.99 it looks as if its in teh 40s but if you put $50 then its definately in the 50s range. If you know what I mean =)

Psychology and Marketing ploys. A price ending with "9" tends to represent a bargain or a good deal. Prices ending with "0" or "5" tend to represent higher quality to the consumer.

Its all psychology. That one guy teetering on the dollar will pay 299 but not 300. Its why you enjoy music while you shop, have the ladies undergarments by the mens shoes, and sales.

Well, for many reasons. when the product is, say 99.99 they can legally say "We Sell fo LESS THAN 100 DOLLARS. BUY NOW" it grabs you, even though it is only 1 cent less than 100, it is less.

If you were comparing 2 products, one is 199.99 and one is 205.00 You automaticly see how much cheaper the 199.99 one is because it isnt even 200 dollars, and the otehr option is ABOVE 200 dollars.. but yet, its only a 5.01 difference. yet people, myself included, fall for it.

we see the bata shoes as 499.95 instead of 500.00 this is because that the sales tax on the company will increase if it is 500 and will reasonably decrease for 499.95 so the company will not lose profit and also get reduced tax
