St. Albans, Canterbury, Kingston upon Thames, Cambridge, Oxford, Richmond upon Thames, Norwich and Uxbridge. We're moving and would like to live in a nice quiet town/city with good job opportunities. Interested in hiking, photography, nature, art and history. Not interested in night clubs.

Absolutely NOT Basingstoke or Milton Keynes. Apart from them they're all fine!

Oxford!

Trust me St Albans, Kingston, Reading, Basingstoke and Milton Keynes are chav city! Shirts and shoes in every pub filled with blokes!

At least Cabterbury, Oxford and cambridge have some culture and really interesting places to go (plus nice pubs!)

Also Oxford has a 24hr bus service (every 12 mins) to london which takes 1 hour so you can enojy the capital without the hassle and expense of living there

Oxford, without a doubt (and no, I'm not from Oxford and nor was I in university there). Has an existence beyond commuter-ville, which most of the others on this list do not, much more character (and far nicer surroundings - ie the Cotswolds and Chilterns) than flat-as-a-pancake Cambridge, which would nonetheless be 3rd choice for me from this lot, and city life unlike country-town Canterbury, my no. 2.

Just wondering why these particular towns???

Not Reading, Basingstoke or Milton Keynes!! Cambridge doesn't have a great atmosphere. Kingston and Oxford woud be my personal choices out of those listed. Very pleasant!

It will all depend on what you enjoy doing, sites, environment etc...

Personally I would say Kingston-upon-Thames, in Greater London its a nice picturesque area, pretty low crime rate, and a quick train ride to get to into the heart on London

I like Basingstoke for nightclubs...

Canterbury for the history...

Didn't really like Milton Keynes when Ive been...

Not sure about the others

This is a difficult one to answer mainly because to get an objective view you would need to have lived in each of those places. People from Oxford are bound to say that their town is best and the same goes for all the others. For myself I would choose Kingston-upon-Thames.

Oxford, without a shadow of doubt. I loved to wander along its streets and old alleys surrounded by stone-walled medieval constructions and quaint inns or going for a snack at a sandwich shop in Covered Market and the numerous lunching with friends at St. Giles Café, then strolling along Broad Street, and the lovely afternoon walks in the wide open fields of University Parks in the Summer. Oxford is truly the city of the Dreaming Spires! Check out a short slideshow of Oxford I put together at http://flagrantdisregard.com/flickr/slideshow.php?id=14274/

Oh Oxford - no doubt. I don't live in UK but that is my favourite city anywhere in the world - drink in the atmosphere and walk the paths, absorbing the history of the pavements and streets.. Imagining the famous people from the past, who passed through the portals of the colleges. The quaint pubs and the libraries and galleries. Otherwise if you don't like history - choose Basingstoke.
