IF you're interested in a beginner level DIGITAL camera, I guess that would be the Canon S3 iS. A bit above that would be the Nikon D40, a bit more expensive but it has interchangeable lens and the kit lens has better glass components for better image detail quality overall. Check with www.bhphotovideo.com or visit your favorite camera shop and see for yourself; hold them in your hands and look through the viewfinder and see which one feels better in your hands.

IF, however, you're interested in a FILM camera, there's ONLY one camera and lens that I recommend: the Nikon N80 and the lens is the Nikkor 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6D; both camera and lens has the versatility and options that you'll need to grow with but not outgrow anytime soon. IF that lens is a tad too expensive, then consider the older but equally as good lens with the same features: Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5-5.6D-micro (or it may indicate "macro"). Make sure that you also get the Instructions Manual and also Thom Hogan's Book on the N80/F80; the help, explanations and suggestions are immense!

Good luck and very best wishes.
