The Jacobson's organ. "This organ is located high up in the roof of the mouth, and has a large blood supply. It traps the odor molecules and sends signals to the brain regarding the scent."

Cats have an organ in the top of their mouths that help them smell. I actually think cats sense of smell is better than a dogs, they just won't track like dogs. I know their sense of smell is much greater than their eyesight.

That is known as the "flehmen" reaction and what they are doing is using a scent organ called the "Jacobsens' organ" located in the top of their mouth. So thats exactly what they are doing, using their mouth to help them check out a really interesting scent!

Your cat is smelling....have you been around another animal.....another cat maybe....NOT A DOG, right ? It seems like cats want to know if you have been " unfaithful to them ! They take your "VOWS" to them very seriously ! As long as you "toe" the line, do as you are told, and they understand they are the master....this act of smelling can actually be amusing ! I love it when my cats do that....this keeps me faithful to them !!

They do this when they smell something interesting to them .Like shoes that have been at another cat's house or something from outside when they are inside cats.Makes them look primal doesn't it?

It is another way to 'smell', to explore a scent.
Try it yourself with a strong odor - such as a fresh peeled orange.

I just always assumed they were "tasting" the scent. You know like Snakes do with their tongues
