I have a 16 year disabled brother with autism. He is low functioning and can say say simple words (eg. yes, no, milk, etc)
We also have a female jack russsel terrier. I'm 13 by the way.
My brother likes to wind the dog up by clapping his hands, hovering his hand above her head, stamping on the floor and banging on the window with his basketball. This all upsets our dog and makes her bark, growl, show her teeth and get aggressive, this eggs my brother on to do more. I just don't know what to do. I don't think there's anything that i can say or do to my brother because he'll stop at the time but then an hour later he'll do it again. I want to de-sensitise my dog to it. If she didn't react my brother would stop annoying her. Please help!!!!

Take your dog out of the room as SOON as it starts, and that will remove the reward from your brother for his actions.
Be consistant, so that the dog is removed every time..
Autism is a heartbreak, but you will become a stronger person for having an autistic sibling..

My consern is that one day the dog will bite your brother and your family will put down the dog. The dog is acting normaly.
I dont know how cognitive your brother is but tell him each time he winds up the dog that if he keeps on doing it, then the dog might be sent away and that would make the family sad.
Maybe that will work. Surlely your parents dont agree with your brothers actions and they should step in.
What would happen if your brother does the same thing to a dog he doesnt know? This has to stop, before he gets hurt and a dog is punished for your brothers actions.
Autism is no excuse for crulelty.

I work with aggressive dogs, and there is a very real risk your JRT will end up biting your brother. Your little dog is scared when your brother behaves this way (as I'm sure you know).
Does your brother by any chance work with a behavior analyst? If so, ask him or her if they can create a positive reinforcement program to help your brother treat the dog better.
The dog may need some help getting over his fear of your brother, too. See about finding an animal behaviorist to work with him.
The behavior of both of them will need to be addressed. Unfortunately if the dog's behavior is reinforcing your brother's behavior this may be a real challenge to resolve.

You are not gonna like this...but a Jack Russell is the wrong sort of dog to have in your household.
Harsh, but the Jack has to go. But a labrador would be a far more understanding dog. They will put up with most things, and are understanding in an unnatural way.

i would work with the dog....get some training books at library and teach the dog not to growl u might not think the dog will hurt your bro but those are not good signs. if it happen with the basket ball only that would be different as maybe her aggression its toward it. have ur dad seek some help with a dog trainer in the home....
hope that helps

Do you think he would get pleasure out of seeing her do funny tricks??? I have taught my lab to "beg" for food by sitting and then lifting her front paws like you would if you were pretending to be a bunny...lol...does that make sense??? And I make it even sillier by saying "Food?!" in a high-pitched voice. It's quite hysterical and makes people laugh (probably more at me!). But maybe if you could find ways that he could make the dog do something funny like that instead of violent or destructive things...???
To train my dog, I got a lot of treats (broken into bits) and told my dog to sit (guided her bottom down until she was sitting) then gave a treat. then i held her front paws in the desired position while i said the command. and then gave her a treat. i did this several times, then asked her to do it and waited to see if she would do it. i had to remind her how to do it quite a few times, but eventually she did it when i asked her. it was so funny. but i gave her a treat after every time i either held her paws in the right place or every time she did it.
But it sounds like your bro. is trying to get the most dramatic response out of your dog. Either show him how to get positive responses from your dog that are just as exciting (like crazy tricks or maybe even throwing a tennis ball, etc. for the dog) or you just might have to put the dog on a leash and remove him from your brother's living area. Like when he begins to do this to your dog just get a hold of the dog and put him on a leash, then take him outside or into your bedroom.
Hope you find some good answers!

Try not to have them in the same room. Out of sight, out of mind.
Or get your brother preoccupied with something else e.g. food that he likes, tv, games etc.

You have it all wrong.
If your BROTHER stops winding the damn dog up then she won't be so aggressive. It's not your dog's fault that your brother is retarded.
