I'm used to saying sorry, because i've done so many stupid things in relationships and friendships. I probably say it so much that it doesn't have a meaning anymore, so now i try not to do stupid things anymore; i'm avoiding saying sorry anymore. I think saying sorry is difficult for people because whoever they are saying sorry to might not accept the apology. I think the reciver of the apology has difficulties in the whole i'm sorry saga, they probably don't think its the best remedy for foregiveness or understanding, which is what the messenger is hoping for.
Saying sorry does help, but not all the time, sometimes you need more than just words.

You know, my ex-husband hurt me in a very cruel and abusive manner, right before my father died. He blamed me for it all, yet still wanted to reconcile before the divorce was final. I told him I would stay married, though separated, and we could go to marriage counseling, as long as he would just apologize for hurting me the way he did. He could not bring himself to apologize to me, and kept insisting I was totally to blame. I divorced him. To this day, as a result of many instances of him never, ever apologizing for his actions to those people he hurts, he lost his wife, he lost his kids, he can't see his kids until he takes a specific anger management class, he has his wages garnished for child support, our teenage son refuses to talk to him, he has a restraining order against him which prohibits him from any contact with our daughter, he lost his driver's license, he lost his job, he lost his home and is now living with his new wife and her mother, he lost his friends, and if he is not careful, he will lose his new wife. Why???? All because when he wrongs a person, he refuses to say he is sorry. What a putz!!

Simply put, alot of people see that as a weakness. Men espeically see that as a sign that they "lost". People would rather save face, hold onto pride and not say a thing then admit they thought or reacted wrong.

For some people it is difficult just because they dislike admitting fault even when fault is obviously theirs. For others, they are expected to apologize when they did nothing wrong. This happens just as often as anything else.

Ego and pride. Sometimes though the person who needs to be apologized to will USE it as a way out.
