NO....that's what coilovers ARE....coils over a shock cartridge. They combine the spring and shock into one adjustable package. Someone isn't paying attention in mechanics school.

You didn't mention the mileage of your car or the last time the shocks were replaced, but do a bounce test: push down on the car's front bumper firmly, like you're going over a speed bump. Do the same for the back and all four corners if you'd like. No matter where you push, the car should go down and then come back up to ride height. If it bounces more than twice, you need shocks badly and they should be replaced.

If not, they're fine. Keep an eye on them and replace them when they fail.

yes unless you want a bumpy ride or depending on the wear and tear of the shoks
