i asked him if he's been deployed to iraq..he told me at first he's not telling me the places he was deployed to. we met online and feel so close despite the distance. but when i ask him abt this stuff, i feel like his withdrawn or something. aren't ppl in the military allowed to talk where they were deployed to? sounds strange to me.

He's practicing good "OPSEC." It's on all of the infomercials on overseas commercials. When you are in the military it's really not safe to give out that kind of information over the phone, online, or to people you do not know. Sometimes not even to people you do know.

My father was in the AF and honest to goodness there were times when my mother and I didn't even know where he was at. He just couldn't tell us.

My husband who is also in the AF cannot tell me what he's doing when he works weekends until about two weeks after. For example--did you see in the news about us going to Somalia? Because my husband works on a special operations base he played a major role in that but I couldn't know what exactly he was doing until it came out in the news.

He's probably just being safe. They are getting a lot of AF guys in trouble for posting things on MySpace about special operations or even their deployments. Believe it or not they have people in the AF who only watch online activity to make sure this stuff doesn't leak.

As for the Army guys I don't know why they told you. Perhaps they missed the OPSEC brief?

My father was in the Air Force for 24 years and my husband was in the Navy. There are some missions that are classified they cannot talk about. I only recently learned that while my father was in, he wasn't usually where he was supposed to be. A lot of times when he went to work, just a normal work day, he would get on a plane and fly directly to another base to work on spy planes. The planes he worked on are no longer classified, so he is able to talk about it now. It all depends on how classified the job assignment is.

One of two things is happening here. Either he has been deployed to places that he can't discuss (yes, this happens), or he's full of sh**. I'm betting that he is full of **it. There have been numerous people in the past that say all sorts of things in order to impress someone.

My advise, don't believe anything. Always ask for proof. If he has been repeatedly deployed, then he will have the medals to prove it.

COMSEC = communications security
OPSEC = operations security

Anyone with common sense should use one or both when communicating outside their theater of operation. Any good soldier/airman/marine/seaman knows not to discuss specific details about their unit or operation. A lot can be interpreted from where a person has been so the safest thing to do is to say nothing at all.

Sometimes they are not allowed to say, but the dude could be a total fake and lying because he has no clue about places in Iraq.

It depends. Some can tell you where they're located and others can't.... it all depends on the missions they're involved in.
A friend in the navy could never say where he was (like no one could see this huge giant ship?).
My husband since he was infantry couldn't always tell me where he was at... it's just something I had to learn to deal with. It does suck tho!

While some deployements are classified, deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan arn't.

sounds like you are talking to a wannbe or someone who is trying to make himself into something he is not online.

Sometimes they are not allowed to discuss their assignments. Sometimes things happen on those assignments that are upsetting to them, so they don't want to discuss it. My father-in-law served in Viet Nam, and while he does talk about some of what he did in the Army, he almost never discuss Viet Nam.

i am in the air force and we are not allowed to tell where and when we go 2 the desert. for me i work on the u2 (spy plane) so everything we do is a secret. im not sure what he does, but if its like anything like what i do - then i can see why he doesnt tell you.

Some missions are not allowed to be discussed for operational reasons, also how does he know that your not a terrorist or spy?
