Find yourself another date for the dance and whenever you get a chance to speak with him, (before or after the dance) let him know you really wanted to go with him but didn't ask because he had already asked someone else....... At least this way he knows you are interested and next dance he can ask you!
BTW - this girl you asked to help you should have never accepted if she was trying to 'help' you get together with this guy she should have said NO when he asked her! ........ What a friend!

hell no!! if you want something in life you go get it!
does he know you want him to go to the dance with you?
if not ASK HIM, the worst that could happen is him saying no.
Who cares plenty of fish in the sea!
what if he's a shy guy and has a kick on you but dont know how to tell you, some girl asked him, but he really wants you! that happens all the time, let him know and then youll know! be strong and if he rejects, well then you can move on to another guy! life is short, dont be affraid to act!

This is how you begin to develop your integrity. You don't ask him out. Find someone else to ask, even if it is casually. You will have fun.
And, if he doesn't continue dating the other girl, then you ask him out again.
