My wife has a lot of videos recorded on a UK-made Sharp viewcam (including our wedding!)
She brought the original 8mm tapes with her to the US and bought an identical US-made Sharp viewcam here, but the tapes will not play properly. Is it something to do with formatting?

You need something to play PAL tapes. If you play the PAL tapes and transfer the video to a computer, you can then make DVD's which will play on NTSC players. You might find someone to do the conversion for you.

Europe uses the PAL Video system! America uses the NTSC system!

Which is better, NTSC started with 96 lines to the inch, PAL 136.

PAL = Perfect Analog Lines

NTSC + Never The Same Color

You figure!

The issue of PAL to NTSC does not arise if you use the AV out on the UK cam. Try playing your cam AV into a AV in on your USA VCR , you can then record it in NTSC and playback on USA CTV. Cheers Pete
