Have your wedding at a time of day that does not put the reception at meal time! That is my best advice...and besides, your wedding if for YOU and no one else!

It all depends on the timing of the wedding. If you have an early - 10 am wedding - you can get away with coffee/tea/snacks after the wedding. If you have a 2 pm wedding you can also just do small snacks after. If the wedding is any time near meal time than people will expect a meal. You might also just put in the invitation "Light snacks to follow wedding."

Oh, yes, she can do this. It's called a cake and champagne reception, or an hordourves (sp?) reception. Make sure she indicates this on the invitation, so that people know not to come too hungry.

Also, these receptions are shorter, and they are set up so that people can mingle around. She should still serve some sort of alcohol (just beer and wine would be fine), hordourves, and cake. Don't forget the cake!

My best friend got married three years ago in the park, then all the guest went back to their apartment where all the guest brought a dish there was some much food and beer wine, cake pies everything you cloud name. They where like 24 years old and they just wanted a party after the wedding and let me tell you it was the best wedding I've ever been to. They don't ask for gifts just come and enjoy your self.

It don't about this gifts it's all about having your friends and family there to share in your special day, just ask them to bring a dish and you bring the appetizers to the big party. PS they also received many gifts

Good luck

Be really careful about how you cost this out. Appetizers / Hors d'oeuvres, while they do initially seem to be cheap. can get reallly expensive really quickly and if you chose to make them yourself they are labor intensive and demanding in terms of presentation.
A plated sit down dinner can actually be cheaper and look a whole lot nicer.
If you stay away from the salmon and the filet mignon and use things like pork tenderloin and stuffed chicken breasts/ chicken kiev you can actually bring it in at a very reasonable cost.
Remember this is a wedding not the last supper ;guests don't have to leave stuffed.
BTW avoid buffets - you really save nothing.

Make sure the reception is not around mealtime. If the wedding starts at one and last an hour or less you can have a two or three hour reception and be done before dinner. No one will expect a meal unless they are very rude.

timing is everything.
you could easily make it an evening wedding and small, evening ceremonies seem to evoke more elegance and romance because they are more intimate. wedding at 7:00, reception at 8:00 p.m. people will have already eaten dinner so you can serve champagne, [or wine] and desserts.
you can have your wedding cake as a centrepiece and then have a beautiful variety of desserts, from heart-shaped cookies iced with the bride's colors to souffles, bars, squares, cakes, tarts, petit-fours. you could have a chocolate fountain if you chose too.
because its evening candles would make perfect centrepieces for your guests' tables, as well as the dessert buffet tables. that wouldn't cost very much either.
it could be really fun and fanciful, and would be very easy to organize. give it some thought instead of appetizers.
good luck! have fun!

Absolutely you can get away with simply serving appetizers, however, be prepared that depending on the timing, people won't hang around forever. But, for a small wedding, that's probably what you want anyway. She doesn't have to do anything she wants, if she just wants to serve cake and punch, that's fine too. It's her wedding!!

have an afternoon (in between lunch and dinner) wedding with cake punch mints and nuts.
or an after-dinner evening wedding with desserts and punch/coffee.
if you don't book a wedding during a meal time guests shouldn't expect a meal, but to make sure you may want to put some info on the invites saying "dessert reception to follow" or "refreshments and dancing to follow"

Appetizers or Hors d'oeuvres are often more expensive than a meal.

It take hours for a caterer to make little bite size pieces but just to put a roast beef in the oven with potatoes or vegetabes is much easier and less expensive.

The easiest way to have an hors d'oeurves only wedding reception is to have it either very early in the afternoon (starting at 2-3) or well after dinner. (7 or later)
Be sure that you let the guests know on the invitation by saying "Cake, and light hors d'oeurves following ceremony." or something similar. Check with your stationary provider for suggestions.
