I am from Missouri as well, I went through this website, www.mychinavisa.com. I mailed my passport to them with the amount of money, in the form of a check, and I had it back in less than a week. They will put a stamp in your passport, I got a double entry one, so I was able to go to Hong Kong and then back in to China. I went back the first part of December, and enjoyed it.

The closest Chinese Consulate to you is in Illinois. If you want a visa, you need to go there in person (address listed on the website). If you do not wish to do this, the website will actually do it for you.
