A charlie horse or a cramp should not last but for a few minutes. It sounds to me as if you may have pulled a muscle. Try applying a heat pack to the area for 15 minutes per 2-3 hours, and next time if swelling, heat or anything that appears to look like a bruise, any redness in one particulair area of the calf, you need to go and seek treatment from your physician to rule out a possible dvt-which is a deep vein blood clot.

Immediately stand on it ASAP (your total weight)and most all times you can prevent the full affect which can give you those lingering pain the next day. Or if you are laying down and can't get out of bed in time stretch the affected leg straight -pointing the big toe as far as you can stretch it away from you. That will also stop it.

I agree with Reva's advice. Also, the moment you feel it coming on, lower your heel and stretch your calf - this usually makes it go away for me. I get them in the middle of the night a lot. Good luck, and I hope it feels better!

In my experience, one of thebest way is too either stand on it firmly or as fast as you can before your muscle contracts push your feet/toes against the wall such that your calf muscles are strentched so as to minimize contraction.

The biochemical process of the cramp is temperature dependent. Ice pack directly to the calf.

point your tows up toward your knee untill the pain stops. works pretty quickly-i used to get these all the time. Also, you may be having these cramps due to not enough potassium or calcium. Take your vitamins!

As soon as it starts, start walking on it. As soon as possible afterwards, ice it. Then rest it a bit. It's going to be sore for a day or so.
