This is because of America's long history of double-dealing. Do you remember the Iran-Contra deal, where the U.S. sold enormous quantities of weapons to Iran?. How about the Afghan mujahedeens fighting against the Russians during the Soviet-Afghan War?. The U.S, supplied them with arms and cash. Remember those Stinger missiles used to shoot-down Russian aircrafts?.
The U.S. will side with just about anybody, as long as they do what their Washington masters tell them to. It doesn't matter whether they are corrupt dictators, drug-dealers or smugglers with oppressive regimes.

Because Iran held US citizens hostage for 444 days. Ayotollah overthrew the Shah who was our ally.
So we took sides with Iraq. Not saying it is right or wrong, but that is what the US did.

Because the Ayatollah was in command in Iran and he didn't like the West very much in particular USA and they wanted control of the oil. They thought Saddam would be easier to control because he wasn't a religious fanatic so they bought him to power.
