Please don't recommend some that have spyware included--that's what I'm trying to get rid of. Free software would be nice, but I'd pay for it if it were great.

The best way to clean up and speed up your pc is not to use software other than whats already there.

do the normal stuff...

delete temp files

go to msconfig and take out any unnecessary programs from the startup.

uninstall any searchbars/companions ( like yahoo, msn, google etc... they are just extra junk)

run an online spyware and antivirus scan
(you can do both and they are good at trendmicro.com's site for free)

defrag your hard drive.

pull up windows task manager ( windows key +r , or start-run-taskmgr )
Look at the processes tab ... if you dont know what some of those running processes are you can look them up on google or whatever. just type in teh process image name.
This will let you know if something is running that shouldnt be. which hopefully after doing all of that there isnt.

Go to the performance tab, look at the physical memory section
and check total physical memory. then look at available.
Right after bootup you should have more than 50% of your ram ( thats the physical memory ) available.
Its those programs in start up plus windows that are using them.

You can run programs that look for duplicate files or registry cleaners but you will get limited benefit from those.
and browsing accelerators really don't do much good. All they do is hit a proxy server that caches commonly accessed sites.

If this doesn't do it well you may want to format and reinstall your operating system .. after you back up your data of course.

Like PITMN says "System Mechanic" is the complete package, removes all the CLUTTER, fixes your registry and shortcut errors, even does you cleanup an defrag for you so you don't haver to spend an hour every day doing " computer housekeeping".

But it costs a few dollars.

If you want a freebie just log in to "Easy Cleaner"
Take a few minutes and read the instructions. It is really a magnificent free cleanup program, completely safe !
