Well it really depends. how long you've known him. if youve known him for a short time and he goes for with in a week then he's just in it to win it but if you've known him for a long time maybe a month then goes for it he's most likely to be in it for you.

1st, there must some sort of physical attraction or lust in order for a man & a woman to have sex.
2nd, they (meaning a man or a woman) may enjoy having sex with their partners without being emotionally attached to that individual or love them. Sex allow men & women to experience & bring them into the pleasurable physiological state being which all of us cannot leave without it. Men tend to crave for sex more than women because of our genetic make up & physiological nature. Men are sperm donors & produce million & million of sperms every day. Therefore, the testes are overloaded with sperms & need to release in order to provide more space for more freshly developed sperms. In order to carry out the task, the male testosterone is released to the penis, making men feel horny, their testosterones are raging whenever they see beautiful women which give them an urge to have sex. That's why men often get penile erections and women often get swollen breasts, nipples, & vagina & vaginal secretion whenever they see the attractive opposite sex....why??....This is a sexual physiological response to LUST not LOVE.
To answer your 2nd question, some guys are players, they just want to hit it for sexual gratifications without a care in the world. But some guys do love their girlfriends when they share their intimate moments.
The rule of thumb is:
1st comes to attraction.
2nd comes to lust.
3rd comes to sexual desire.
4th comes to love. (may or may not, depends on an individual's self dignity & morality).

guys and girls really dont think all that differently. it depends on the person . that i am sorry to say is the correct answer to your question.
as for how to know if he cares for you ask yourself how he would know you care for him then look for similar behaviours or words from him . see all about the same.
