Sure they can. I work long shifts as a paramedic (48 hrs), and my husband often calls and tells me that our dog is looking for me - sometimes around the house by going room to room, and sometimes by looking out the window. She will get mad when she sees me pack up my duty bag the night before. I've caught her stealing stuff out of it, like my socks or toothbrush. He will often change her routine a little, just to get her mind off of it (taking her to run errands, playing with one of the special toys we keep put up that she doesn't get to play with routinely, etc.). Maybe you can just vary her routine. However, much like a person, I think you might want to get her checked - there may be something physical causing it. I hope that your dog does well.

They can suffer from depression, she could also just be getting older, or going through pregnancy. Take her to the vet if you're concerned, but as long as she's eating and exercising on a daily basis I wouldn't worry too much. Your dog just may have a calm disposition!

My small dog suffered from depression when we had the big dog put down :(. The only solution was to get another dog. At first, she acted angry, and may have been, as the new dog is younger and more active than her. Have there been any major changes in your dog's life (surroundings, family members leaving, daily routines)?

Is it the weather? My dog has seemed really sad lately and I think it is the Freezing cold weather right now. (it is depressing to me, and she can't go out and play, so it is probably depressing to her)

Afraid they can-mine get depressed when its too cold to go out much, or rainy. try taking her out for a little run for an hour or so tomorrow and see if that perks her up.
