I just cut my hair. It used to be past my waist; now it is to my waist exactly.

I think it's more of an emotional bond. Long hair represents lots of time to care for it, and in the past it has been the symbol of a healthy and beautiful woman. I know I would sob my heart out if ever my hair was cut, and I can't think of a rational reason why.
