Ok, I've been fostering rescued cats for 4 years and working in a pet store for 2. So I thought I'd been around the bend when it came to cats but....

Boxing week I adopted a white persian. Behaviour problems, peed everywhere she said. The cat had no problems. The problem she she didn't maintain his coat and his urine would get stuck on HIM!

SOOOOO.... once he was shaved he was great, or was he?

The cat goes crazy to eat any and all human food and its difficult to get him to eat any cat food that is not, or mixed with, Fancy Feast. I caught him one night eating spaghetti sauce out of the pot. The pot was on the stove. It wasn't on, but other burners were. I've pulled him out of popcorn bags, he'll lick the inside. I walked away from my cereal one morning, cat was devouring Special K Vanilla Almond.

He also eats and licks tape or any adhesive.

Any suggestions? Vet says "just keep training him 'NO'"... I'm afraid for the cat's health and safety!

I'm having the exact same problem with the kitten I adopted. The people before you must ave let him eat people food and that's what he likes to eat...Try to keep him away from it all together, I lock my kitten in the bathroom when I'm cooking and I squirt him with a water bottle when he gets in my plate. You just have to be super careful and make sure that popcorn bag that you normally wouldn't think to throw away as soon as you finish had to be thrown out now. I know it sucks, trust me!! My kitten once pulled y 7 dollar quiznos off my coffee table when I went to get a drink from the kitchen...it only took 10 seconds!!

As for chewing tape...my cat does it too. I actually had to pull it out of his mouth a couple times..lol. I asked my vet about it and she said it's just a complex that some cats have. Just make sure they don't get into anything that will hurt them.

first of all, do not leave him alone in a room with open pots or pans with food still in them. dont leave groceries out where he can get them and leave the room. Make sure he has no opportunity whatsoever to eat human food, and yes this means also making sure that your cat cannot get into the garbage can! what happened was that your cats old owner never fed him cat food, he doesnt know what to do with it. To him it is something that is not even edible. He must now be trained to eat, and like catfood, not human food. just like dogs that are treated the same way he must be trained to eat what he is supposed to. once the cat figures out that he can no longer have all the human food that he wants he will start turning to what he can have, which is cat food. he might just pull the *okay i will starve myself until I get what I want* stunt. dont budge! keep giving him cat food, soft or hard, until he gets hungry enough to eat what is put in front of him. dont worry it will all turn out for the better. if he continues to get human food i guarantee that your cat will have a heart attack within a year from high cholesterol. hope this helps.

That is strange cats are usually very picky. I would suggest trying to keep all food and trash away from him for a while. Mix fancy feast with some very good dry food. Try to let him eat his favorite human food but put bitter apple spray all over it, and periodically do this he will get in his head that human food bad cat food good. This is my only solution, I did this with a dog maybe it will work with a cat?

I think it is time to get the cat to a vet. It sounds like he/she may be experiencing some sort of mineral deficiency. You know, when pregnant women crave dirt, it's really iron they need. I know that sounds crazy, but I am a Physicians Assistant. I have seen humans crave really strange things. Also, the cat may be acting out from trauma. My advice, take him/her to the vet. Hope this helps.

Purposely leave out food that is laced with tabasco. After a few samples of that, he should start geting the messege.
