My Carin has an allergic reaction to something that makes black spots on her skin. Then there is the cycle of scratching and losing hair before it clears up. The vet cleared it up with steroids and put her on a (rice & egg) perscription diet. Three weeks after starting the diet the spots are back. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing it because now the vet is saying she may need to be on steroids all the time?

sometimes in areas of chronic irritation, skin can become hyperpigmented (black). Has she had a skin scrape to rule out scabies. Is she negative for fleas. Is this skin problem consatnt or is it seasonal. Sometimes it make take the diet a while to work (6-8 weeks-so those spots might be from the steriods wearing off). If she is on prescription diet she can not have anything but that. If she does have food allergies, just on bite of human food can set it off. Ask your vet about trying benedryl as well, I have seen that used on allergic dogs to help decrease itching. And ask your vet why he chose steroids, yes they help with itching, but they have lots of bad side effects and are not generealy desireable unless absolutley needed.

good luck
