Not sure about actual McCarthyism, but I take issue with the response that states that all Christians view atheists as unAmerican and unpatriotic....I am a Christian, proud American patriot. Being unAmerican and unpatriotic has nothing to do with Christianity...The troops who are fighting for our way of life are the best examples I can think of to show patriotism...and we have them to thank for the right to post such questions and answers here...We can express ourselves, have debates, and ask questions without fear of reprisal....Even if we Christians seem to be blamed for all the ills of the world.

Oh, yes, very much so. It shows in the number of Christians who accuse atheists, agnostics, and non-Christian faiths as "unpatriotic" and "Un-American." Old "Tail-Gunner Joe" would have loved that. It shows in how hard the Christians are pushing to have religious teaching in publicly-funded schools. They don't have the commies to go after any more, so now they're coming after US.

To an extent, yes. Two examples of McCarthyistic holdovers are the addition of "In God We Trust" on currency and "Under God" in the Pledge. Those divisive words are still being pushed by those who feel they need the government to push their religion for them.
