Because a bunch of greedy people in US gov't expected to have Iraq pay for it's 'freedom' from Saddam in oil and wouldn't listen when the entire International community and a quarter of its own population tried to talk some sense into them...
Instead of sticking to the mission in Afganistan, a war that was conceivably winnable, and based on catching the actual perpetrator of the atrocity sited as the original excuse for both wars...
So we are now in a war that our grandchildren will be feeling the effects of for their entire lives...

We are not at war; we WON the wars, remember?
We are merely present in Afghanistan and Iraq to help rebuild their governments...for the next 20 years...

If nothing else, to give people in other parts of the world even half of the freedoms that we have. freedom of speech for example... to build schools, to spark hope in a devastated economy, to give a damn about somebody else but ourselves for a little while.
It shouldn't be considered a war, it should be considered a conflict. Suprisingly, not many soldiers have lost their lives over there. They actually welcome us in most parts. And I have yet to meet a soldier that doesn't want to go over there.

it is to put us on the offensive side in the world. it is a smart move by bush, being on the offense. that is why there hasnt been another terrorist attack, is because we scared anyone who was even thinking about challanging us. look at britain, they havnt done anything really and they have had more terrorist attacks on them scince 9 /11, because they dont fight back, because they remian on the defensive side

It is about personal gain, oil profits. There was no rational reason to go to Iraq. We should have stayed more involved in Afghanistan. But they don't have any oil.
