The LDS Church was officially organized on April 6, 1830.
The church website at:
www.mormon.org
has a lot of information. Go into "find information" click on the letter "c" and scroll down to "church". There you will be able to research Church History.
As for looking up cults, they probably are not going to give you sufficient (or accurate) information as to the founding, growth and impact of the Mormon Church. Go straight to the source. Good luck with your assignment.

The only thing I can emphasize is make sure you get information from the source - like LDS.org or Mormon.org
Please don't get your information from unofficial or anti-mormon groups or sites - that info will be filled with half-truths, falsehoods and some flat out lies.

If you look at how the church has grown, it is AMAZING. The church was officialy founded April 6, 1830. It started out with only 6 members. We have over 12 million members worldwide now and if you watch, it will just continue and continue to grow. The restoration of the gospel has provided SOOO many of us with wonderful blessings and sacred opportunities that have not been available to mankind for a long long time - such as the sealing of marriages and families for eternity, the blessings of the Priesthood, and the power of repentance. The Book of Mormon I believe has changed more lives than any other book on the earth, except probably the bible - and probably just because it has been around longer.
I love the gospel and know it has changed not only my life here on eath for the better, but that I have a knowledge of where I can spend eternity.

I think you need to look at the pro-LDS books and the things that were wrote by non-LDS. Just because it was wrote by a non-LDS person doesn't mean that the info will be false. I think you would get a more objective view with the non-LDS than with the LDS. After you've investigated things a little you will be able to tell the difference between from the morons that just have an ax to grind, and from the ones who really want everyone to know the truth about what the LDS believe. The pro-LDS stuff is usually puff pieces and a lot of spin that don't give you the full story.

First of all, do not listen to T_A_M_I_L...

Second, I am LDS (Mormon) so here would be my take...

The Mormons affected people in its own time because their presence caused members of other religions to feel threatened. The ministers stirred up the other people, and the Mormons endured severe bigotry everywhere they went. Eventually, amidst attacks from mobs, they left and went to Utah, where they would not be driven out. This was another affect the LDS made - those people surrounding them were bombarded by Satan to attempt to get rid of the LDS, especially ministers who saw their congregations being shrunk by the church that they realized was true but they would not admit they were wrong.

Later in history... it is much of the same bigotry, although we don't get chased out anymore (I'm pretty sure that would be illegal). Also, by 'own time' I am assuming you meant when it was founded... technically, Mormonism still exists so you could say today is still its 'own time'... there are over 12,000,000 members now in fact.

Hope this helps, good luck with your report!

A good book to read is "One Nation Under Gods." It reveals quite a lot that is rarely mentioned nowadays. Joseph Smith was chased out of town for creating his own currency, and the Mormons in general were evicted for moving into towns and boycotting those who weren't Mormons. You should check out the Danites as well.

For their history, go here: http://www.carm.org/lds/beginning.htm

The Mormons were pretty much chased out of every place they went all the way from the east coast to Utah.

Go to a Christian store or web site, and get a book on different cults. Look for one that has a chapter about Mormonism. It will tell you everything you need to know.

If you place sequential numbers, starting with 1, to the letters in the name: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and total these numbers the total will be 666
