I have two friends with this problem right now - one doctor thought it was a Strep Rash so rule that out first- they ruled it out for one of my friends and had taken sections of his skin for tests- we wont get the results for a day or two but i'll let you knwo what it is- also in response to the person who told you to look up pityriasis rosea i had that this summer and that is not like tiny bumps it is like a large rash with a pale middle and in addition to all over the body it forms on the back and looks like a christmas tree kind-of with branches extending onto the sides- not tiny bumps

Rashes happen for a lot of reasons, and you can develop new allergies and skin disorders at any time in your life. If you live someplace cold, the rash could be related to the dry heat made by furnaces. If bendryl helps, you've probably developed a new allergy. See an allergist, but in the meantime, bathe in Aveno (the little packets you dump in the bath - ask your pharmacist), use Cortizone, put Neosporin on areas where the skin is broken, and try to relax! Stress makes rashes worse. If you develop high fever or the rash is really freaking you out, go to Urgent care.

He should stay with one doctor, because if a doctor's treatment is not effective and you let him know, he'll know to try something else. To go to another doctor is starting out again from scratch (no pun intended). Look up pityriasis rosea on Wikipedia, webMD, etc. See if that describes it. If it does, sunlight for a day or so can stop it during the first week or so, otherwise, 3-4 months. My sister had it and itched like crazy, but son had it and itching wasn't as bad. GOOD luck!

Could it be hives? Is he having an allergic reaction to something? Have him try taking an over the counter antihistimine like Claritin, Alavert, Benadryl, etc. If those medications help, then its an allergy. If that doesn't help, he needs to go see a dermatologist-they specialize in skin conditions and probably would do better than just a MD.

Get him to call a pharmacist and ask for suggestions of over the counter medications.

If that does not work, he needs to go to a dermatologist.

lol ...it doesn't sound contagious!

It sounds like he's come into contact with something he's allergic to.
