dunno why this is in mental health.
Traditionally, republicans favored a strong national defense, keeping taxes & spending low, a good business climate including minimal interference with business, and gun rights. Now, there seems to be more emphasis on wedge issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the involvement of churches in the way our government is run.
Traditionally, democrats favored strong education & a social welfare system (meaning that you would be helped if you lost your job etc.) limiting the power of business to keep things more fair for the average workers (support unions), civil rights, and gun control. They used to be considered the big spenders, but ever since & including Reagan, the republicans have WAY overspent the democrats (national defense being a big culprit-first star wars under reagan, now iraq). Democrats have given up the gun control issue, because the NRA is too strong.
don't be a patsy and go for that wedge issue stuff. Republicans are just using that because it is easy to understand those wedge issues, and the right-wing Christian block actually VOTES those issues. Even gay republicans will disingenously offer up plans to ban gay marriage. All that wedge stuff is political maneuvering. I can't even tell you what to do, because neither party stands for anything. Personally, I have been a democrat ever since the Moral Majority started persecuting gays for political advantage and republicans pandered to them. Reminds me of Jew-hating.

Dems believe in liberal large governments that have a lot of control. For example they would prefer to have a socialistic health care system where everyone is equal and it is paid out of everyones pocket (usually the middle or uppermiddle class). The republicans are all about the small government and capitalism. They would much rather let a company that is doing well expand its size and services then to limit a large companies abilities or to shovel money into small businesses.

They are both socialists, just on different topics. The republicans want to control our morals, not really with abortion, but with drug crimes, marriage rights,.....while democrats want to help the economy only leading to more harm do to government inefficiencies! They don't understand the beauty of freedom, the only believe that their fantasy world can be realized on earth(which it cannot)! They forget why we have these freedoms in the first place and why the human race has had to fight through thousands and thousands of years of tyranny. They both believe in democracy(tyranny by the majority) and have little knowledge about life under a free republic!

Democrats are for the working man(blue collar workers) and middle class man. Republicans are for the business owners or money making man or higher class man. Sometimes people start as democrats but then later become republicans as they make more money and most people stay in a certain party as they have been raised in that party by their parents. Almost like a religion.

In my humble opinion at the moment there is very little difference, most of them just want to feed at the public trough and stay in their positions so will say or do most anything. Have you noticed the cheating, lying, stealing, murder and all they do is , Gee I am sorry it was wrong of me. If we did that as ordinary citizens we would be in jail.
