What reasons are there to get tattoos?

Some people like to get tattoos to just display things they feel are important to them.
For example you see quite a lot of people with tattoos of someone like Eminem has one of his daughter.
Angelina Jolie has different tattoos about the places she's been.

My reason is that it has a special purpose to me. The design has been a general idea for four years and still has kinks being banged out, but what it represents remains the same. In my experience, most people will give a generic response to this question, but that is only because we can't put it into words why we are so drawn to it.

The reasons are as endless as there are people that have them. Some do it for the art, some for memorials, some to signify their belief in something, some to show pride in something, some on a drunken whim, some to be a "tough guy", the list could go on and on.
Mine are all symbols of my pride in my Irish ancestry, I have a Celtic cross on my left arm, and a knotwork band around my right arm. I'm waiting on #3, which is going to be a knotwork shamrock on the back of my neck, until my wife goes in for her first one.

Well, gee... maybe for the same reason people color their hair, or wear certain clothes... because they want to and it makes them who they are. Tattoos are not for everyone but there's no reason to bash people for having them... last I heard, it's a free country.

BettyBoop & Agent99 both have it right. It's like any personal decision, in that it varies a lot from person to person, and sometimes from time to time. Sometimes there are even seemingly conflicted reasons.

I get tats because they have a specail meaning to me its like showing my heart on my skin..letting the world know what I'm all about I'm not ashamed of it.
