I have tried it all. I think a lot and there is no home remedy that can turn my mind off. I have had to re-evaluate a lot of things in my life and one of them being....take whatever you need to make yourself healthy...I dont mean overuse anything, just help yourself. Sure try all the other remedies, but if they dont work, then there is no sin in taking medication to give you sleep. If you are sleep deprived then you will get depression....sleep deprivation is very serious and if left unchecked for a long period of time, it will cause you all sorts of problems...including physical as well as emotional problems. Dont think you are a failure if you need medication that a doctor prescribes, but be sensible about it too. I need sleeping tablets to make me sleep......but I will only take them at most, every 3 days....I do not want to get addicted, and if I can only take them like this then I can take them for the rest of my life and have no ill effects. I have also found that if I have a good nights sleep, and this happens on a regular basis, then my sleeping patterns seem to improve...Your body can get used to no sleep, and its very hard to get it back into "normal" patterns. The last time I took a sleeping pill was 5 days ago...my sleep patterns havent been too bad...but when a stressful event comes along in my life then I may as well say goodbye to sleep because like I said I am a big thinker and the moment I go to bed my mind seems to become too active. I need help to sleep, that is something I have had to admit to myself...I have tried everything else, and this is the only thing that works for me. It doesnt make me a loser or anything, just someone who knows what sleep deprivation can do to a person. We need our sleep for us to be healthy....and if we dont get it, then you are in trouble...maybe not straight away, but it WILL take its toll if it goes unchecked.

Not much. There are drugs that the doctor can prescribe that are basically synthetic man-made versions of the chemicals that your body makes, or at least it's supposed to, under normal conditions.

You can try a hot bath, but when you go to sleep, your temperature drops. Don't make yourself uncomfortably cold, but turn the thermostat down a few degrees.

Also, have a turkey sandwich for the tryptophan. And if you don't go to sleep within 15 minutes, get up and walk a little. Alternate the 15 minutes trying to sleep with a little walk. This will hopefully also help.

Insomnia can have a large number of causes, and some of them do require meds.

So, if this is an ongoing problem, or one that keeps on happening, see your doctor. Describe your problems and ask for a sleep study. That means spending overnight, at least, in a hospital or free-standing sleep clinic, wired 20+ different ways, with those measurements being recorded. It will take a couple of weeks or so for these measurements to be analyzed, and your doctor will receive a report that includes diagnoses. Based on that, there are a number of things that can help, but they could well include meds.

You want to do things this way. You have to do things this way. Chronic sleep deprivations causes all kinds of problems, including short term memory loss. It's also heavily implicated in a large number of chronic illnesses, including diabetes.

See your doctor.

I agree. Chamamile (spelling?) tea is supposed to be good before bed. Dairy products such as milk or cheese is a popular wives' tale, but maybe it works! Certain scents such as lavender are also supposed to aid in sleeping. You could also try laying in bed and clearing your mind. To do this, focus on your breathing only. Push every other thought instantly away. I know it sounds weird, but it works for me sometimes. Try looking into websites with information on lucid dreaming. Those generally have alot of tips on them that most people don't think about. Good luck!

Lifting weights. It is an anaerobic exercise that uses up the sugars in the blood stream. With low blood sugar comes a desire for sleep. Aerobic exercise, like jogging, stimulates the burning of fat, which can add fuel to your blood. This is why you see all those aerobics shows on early morning TV.

do not use your bedroom for anything other than sleep and sex, so your mind will associate your room as a place to sleep, sleep and wake at the same time every day so your body will get used to it, do not watch tv in your room, drink something warm about 30 minutes to an hour before bed, breath really slow to relax, read something boring, write down anything in your mind so you can stop thinking about it, once you have a routine you should be able to sleep fine

don't drink stimulants after 2 pm such as coffee, tea, and even chocolates... some say drinking warm milk may help you go to sleep.and a friend of mine bought a small turtle and placed it inside a fishbowl and she took care of it and watched it everytime. especially if she can't sleep.
