I have had the same experience and MOST are a SCAM!
I ask what years, unit and to name 4 city's in Nam, Siagon doesn't count. If he passes I open the door and give him a ride to breakfast. If it is a SCAM he will NOT get in because he doesn't want to miss the begging time.
I have had some interesting conversations over breakfast, picked up a Motel 6 bill for a couple nights and got one an interview for a job after he cleaned up a bit. I give a buck, $20 or NOTHING!
DO NOT do THIS unless you are physically capable of disarming a NUT CASE!
Unfortunately, most are NUT cases taking a ride on the lives of 57,--- COURAGIOUS NAM VETS that did NOT come home.
If you are NOT capable, give a buck or NOT!
I have given a buck to maybe 20, breakfast with 4 and maybe actually helped TWO. Your call, but be SMART and SAFE!

Anyone of a certain age bracket can say they're a Nam vet, they can even find an OD green field jacket and wear it around, but that doesn't mean they're telling the truth. Having a homeless person tell me they were a vet wouldn't sway me against their pleas, but I can't say it would make me any more inclined to give them money. I give money to the cute old guys standing in front of Wal-Mart and such when they do their poppy drives, because I know the money will go towards helping mulitple people for things they actually need, but I try not to give hand-outs to beggars. I gave a ham sandwhich I had just bought to a young, hungry man once, but only because he asked so nicely. He was even grateful and said 'Thank you'.

No. He may be lying. Even if he is telling the truth, being a veteran doesn't automatically mean giving him a dollar is the right thing to do. If i have food I'll sometimes give it to a homeless guy, but never money. Besides, 75% of the people who served in vietnam (or any conflict) saw little to know actual fighting. There service is appreciated, but I swear if w actually had as many infantryman over there as there are people now claiming they were, that country would have sank into the pacific.

Unfortunately, there are individuals who will say that they are homeless veterans in order to get more of a response (and more donations) from passers by.
There really is no way of telling whether a person claiming this is a Vietnam vet or not. You could ask them questions - but you'd have to really know your stuff to be certain they're telling the truth. It would be easier to just either give them the money or not give them the money. In the end, that's a choice you have to make.

If I had the time, would take him out for a meal on me and ask him about his experiences. I am a Veteran Marine myself and was raised in the Corps by 'Nam Vets. I give them the kudos they deserved and didn't get when they answered the call to duty - this is regardless of how you feel about the war itself.
If I didn't have the time, I ask them their name, what service they were in, what they did in the service, give them $5 and tell them (and keep them) in my prayers.

a lot of Vietnam vets are dysfunctionals sporting pony tails and living in the woods. They don't like the establishment and what it did for them. Eventually they give up the hardships of the forest for the comfort of the shelters.

Yes, if you have a spare dollar give it to the person. I would rather know first hand where my money is going instead of letting the government take my money and disperse it. People in this country need to be more charitable, so we can move away from socialist programs like welfare.

Not everyone who puts on a fatigue jacket with some patches is a homeless VET. Anyone falling for that deserves to be taken for any money they give.
