Family lawyers can also serve as mediators in resolving differences without returning back to court - for example, if mom signs up the child for soccer practice - the dad should not initiate contempt proceedings just because he wasn't asked.

Family lawyers are appointed as attorneys for children and are obliged to advocate for the best interests of the child.

Family lawyers also work for House of Ruth and other organizations which deal with protecting women against domestic violence and ensuring that women receive due process.

Finally, family lawyers do represent juveniles at juvenile court hearings and anything involving child in need of assistance (CINA) or child in need of service (CINS) proceedings.

I would suggest you ask around, you're in the military and I'm guessing you work with a few people who have been down this road. It's not a good idea to fight for custody while deployed because it is very obvious that you won't be the "primary" if you are deployed or even deployable. Unless you can prove her to be unfit you honestly don't have a good case. 5 years ago when I got divorced I was told a person who is active duty only gets custody if A. they prove the other parent unfit B. the other parent doesn't fight it. Simply because the other parent is considered "primary care provider" since you are deployed.

Some will also handle wills, estates, living wills, trusts, and power of attorney documents.

In some cases they will handle all legal issues that a family may have including tickets (moving violations, etc), judgments, other legal proceedings that may come up.

They deal with custody cases, divorce, wills, pre-nuptuals, etc. Its a lot harder than you would think. Dealing with children is hard on a lot of people.
