That is called an opthalmascope (I am in med school and have one) and it is used for a number of things. We use them to examine the retina and blood vessels of the eye, which can show a number of disease processes both in the eye and in other parts of the body as well including the brain. My professor calls the eyes the window to the body. (no, you cannot see the brainstem, and glaucoma is an increase in pressure, so that is not tested by visual examination, and a good color is actually kind of a reddish orange)

My baby is 4 months old and had this done today. I am sure they look for a variety of things, but today because of the sons abnormal eye movement they were looking at the nerves to make sure they were ok... And they found that he has something called OCCULAR ALBINISM... pretty much the color in his eye is like an albino persons skin and hair, there is no pigment. This is what is causing his issues!
Anyways, thought it was interesting you asked, its a huge variety of things they look for and can find!

troys right, the doc was looking at the blood vessels in the eye. My turns out the lights looks in your eye, I had this done when I was having headaches to look for other health conditions that can cause swelling of blood vessels as well as headache. You can tell your brain stem function by your pupils reaction to the light, you can't actually see the brain stem.

They are typically looking for a detached retina, abnormal blood vessels, general color of retina, reaction of cornea to light, and possible infections in the retina. They also test your optical motor responses by doing various motions with the device.

I have to get this done very frequently due to my macular degeneration. Very common and good practice. If your optometrist doesn't do this for you once every two years... see someone else!

Believe it or not, the doctor can look through your pupil, through the back of your eye and at the base of your brain and brain stem. I asked by eye doctor exactly what he was looking at and he told me he was looking at my retina and the back of my eyeball and also looking at the base of my brain and my brain stem. I was totally amazed.
