If you want something with a little character, the Provincial on Chartres is right in the heart of the Quarter. It's pretty and reasonably-priced. It's a historic property, the rooms have some antiques and while it's not luxurious, it's perfectly nice. There's a courtyard with a pool and you get free continental brkfst. Beinville House has been there many yrs., it's known as a low cost hotel with an artsy atmosphere. Not quite as nice as Provincial, but great location nr. Jackson Square. You might like Port o' Call on Esplanade. Someone told me to go there, saying it's the best cheeseburger on earth. It's a dive bar with really good food. Another cheap place to eat is Poppy's on St.Peter Street.

If you have 3 people in your group then a cab is the cheapest way. If there is only one or two people then the shuttle is the cheapest. Same on the return trip.

OK, so this is just a tiny bit cheating. Find out which hotels have shuttle services to the airport and hop a ride when you see the appropriate shuttle pull up to the terminal.

check the city bus routes to see if they go out to the airport. it may take a bit longer, and you may have to change buses a time or two, but it would be significantly cheaper than taking a cab.

Call a CAB.

This little trick works in most cities. In case you were wondering.
