What if it is 1944 and you are a resident of Amsterdam. You are hiding a Jewish family in your attic and some SS soldiers come to your door asking if you have seen that same family. Should you lie to them or tell them the truth?

Are there any moral absolutes?

Of course you must sometimes lie... there are no moral absolutes.

The moral absolutes come about, I believe, when u have enouh experience to know. Personal responeses one on one are the most difficult because of trust issues. On truth, it is always true that u said what u said. I assume that u are concerned with the underlying current of truth itself. I believe truth is situational. In peer situations lies can be repeated so it may be true that lies are truth becasue they were spoken.
In the grand scheme of things it is best to not lie. And the best way to not lie is to not speak. Watch out for those Eternal tests where something comes up like before or seems to repeat itself in ur life.

Actually, I don't recall the Bible or the 10 commandment saying that lying was a sin. Now, "bearing false witness against a person", that is what we need to be careful about.

In the case you cited, I think "against a person" would be the important distinction. In that case, you wouldn't want to say something that would be "against the Jewish family".

My answer, lie your "you know what" off. - Even if you are wrong, technically, a confession to God, is a small thing compared to saving the life of innocents.

PS: Jesus told us there would be days like that. He said, do not strain a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Amsterdam in 1944????? Are you nuts? The bombings there chased every sane person out into the countryside.

Answer this question: If a crazed starving gay Gypsy maniac jumped on your back would you beat him off?

the ss never politally knocked and waited to be let in. they stormed the door open and trampled through without announcing they were coming.

but.. is it right for me to admit to the enemy of the Jew that I have taken in Jewish refugees .. knowing that if found or caught, the Jews and I would be both killed.. when my intent of inviting the Jews into my home in the first place is to keep them alive?

God has said, those who bless (the Jew) will be blessed. those who curse (the Jew) will be cursed.

is it right to do what God said, or right to do what the ss said?

Yes, there are certainly times when a lie is better than the truth.
Not just extreme examples like you gave, but even in our daily lives.

Its all up to you. Every single person has free choice in life. What do YOU yourself think is right?

You should always love. Lying is usually not an expression of love.
