My first car was an 88 golf. It was a tank! That thing drove with the alternator falling off! It never broke down outside of my driveway, it was an awesome little beast!
I have a few friends who own newer ones and they've never had problems with them.

The newer models have decent reliability, but once they get like 4 to 5 years old they can get troublesome.
But if you maintain it properly, it'll be pretty reliable. But, you can't escape European car reliability. They're fun to drive though.
