About 2 weeks ago we adopted a rat terrier puppy from the pound. Shortly after, I noticed that the puppy doesnt eat much. She also has this GAWD AWEFUL hacking cough, and bad breath.

At first, the fits weren't that bad, but now they are happening more frequently. She hasn't really gained any weight, her bones are showing and Im worried about her. I tried changing her food, but that didn't seem to increase her appetite either.

Could this be kennel cough. I did get her at the pound.

Sounds like kennel cough. That usually clears up by itself after 2 weeks. However, watch out for secondary infections. It could also be heart worm. Pounds dont usually do any testing like the resue places or humaine society; As far as the eating. That could be stress. Try puting a little bit of grape or stawberry jelly in the food just a little bit and mix it well. I think you'll see quick increase in appitite. Once she settles she sould be fine. You want to take her to the vet if the coughing doesnt stop in anoter few days or if it gets worse. Some of the petco and petsmart locations do heartworm tests. If you cant afford a vet.

Please dont let people scare you with parvo. Everytime a dog is sick it got to be parvo. The parovirus is a very unique virus. Most puppies wont get it if they are vaccinated properly. Caughing is not one of the symtoms.

It could be kennel cough since she has been around other dog that may not have had there shot when they where brought in. I would take to the vet as soon as you can and if it is kennel cough you may want to call the pound where you got her so they know that it may be going around and they can watch the other dog for signs of it. I hope she gets better

Most of the time it is about a 50/50 choice. The pounds of full of dogs from breeders. Not the reputable breeders but the back yard breeders (BYBers). The pounds of full of them. Low quality & mutts are about the same. If you are looking for a pet the pound & a BYBer is about the same. If you want a high quality dog go to a reputable breeder. It will be show quality & will cost you quite a bit more than the lower quality dogs. So it depends on what you want. Reputable breeders also sell pet quality dogs. They are the ones that don't have what it takes to be a show dog, so they are sold as pet quality but they also come with a strict contract that the dog will be spayed or neutered so the bad genetics are not passed on to another litter. To the breeder these dogs & just pet quality but they are higher quality than a BYBer, Puppy Mill or the pound. So it all boils down to the quality of the dog you want.

Yes, this could be kennel cough. It could also be some type of respiratory problem. The only way will be taking her to the vets to be checked out. Don't wait any longer, make an appointment as soon as possible. Hope she'll be okay.

It could be kennel cough; did the pound tell you if the puppy has any current vaccinations? For example, vaccinations against distemper, corona virus, bordetella, etc., as well as heartworm medication. You should take the puppy to your vet. They can update any vaccinations, but more importantly, they can diagnose what's really going on.

To the vet ASAP. If its parvo then dont wait anylonger. I lost a good puppy that was healthy one day and was so sick the next that he passed on before we could get him to a vet. I also had anouther that we barly saved. Costed a lot but was worth it after we picked him up. PLease dont wait anylonger. What ever the puppy has needs Medical attintion ASAP.

Sounds like she has issues - a vet visit is in order, and be sure yo take care of her teeth. Dental chews are fine, but get her teeth cleaned professionally, and keep up with this.
Fresh air in your home and meds from the vet should clear up the cough. Good luck with your Rattie! I love mine so much.

You should call the pound where you got the puppy. Most city or county shelters guarantee their adoptions to be healthy, spayed or neutered, and current on initial shots. They will most likely have their vet examine your pup or give you a voucher to see another. If it was a private "rescue" or the spca, you may be on your own.
Good Luck.
