If you stare at him - he becomes submissive and then after approximately 5 minutes runs like crazy around the living room with his tail tucked in between his hind legs. It's so strange to watch.

You should never look a dog in the eyes and stare at them, to them this is a challenge of who is the best fighter and who is the boss, this is why yours runs round frightened, but some dogs will attack you and can be very nasty with it. Plz dont do it with any dog unles you are petting them and saying nice things to them. Ex breeder

Terriers are very lively and love to jump around. So what he's doing is between his personality and fears. Maybe he doesn't like the look on your face when you stare at him. Just dont stare at him!

Most rescue dogs have a fear of big vans and lorries as some have been dognapped in them they will never love big vans and lorries again. Maybe someone stared at him when he was a puppy and he still remembers...

His tail between his legs is a sign of unhappiness. I dont think you like people staring at you and your dog thinks the same.

If it is an angry or scowling stare it is perceived as threatening - you are the boss and you are issuing a challenge! Staring is OK if you need to reinforce that you are the boss - but it is better to stare warmly - make it a 'friendly' stare.

this is because in the wild predators will stare dogs in the eye before attacking. if you stare at your dog he will think that you are intimidating him and will become scared. try not to stare at him directly because he may become aggressive after a while.

Because it is a sign of dominance when you look a dog in the eye.
He's saying don't hurt me I am smaller than you less dominant.

do not continue to do this to your dog. when you stare at him you are issuing doggy talk for * I want to fight with you*. when you do this you scare him to death. eventually your dog will try to run away and he WILL NOT come back. it is considered cruelty when you do this.
