Based on your understanding of sympathetic nervous system function, explain why having preganglionic fibers making contact with many postganglionic fibers fits the role of the sympathetic nervous system

The ratio of preganglionic to postganglionic fibres is about 1:20. The more postganglionic fibres = more effect because 1 preganglionic fibre can effect 20 motor units. Because the sympathetic nervous system is mainly responsible for the fight or flight response it requires a large, quick, systemic reaction.

Every sympathetic ganglion is an endocrine gland in itself secreting Adrenalin, much like Adrenal medulla. Sympathetic ganglia are distributed all over the body and that`s how all reflex functions of heart and vital organs are performed.
