I just first want to tell you that I appreciate how you worded your question very excellently.
I don't distrust Christians or atheists more than the other or less. If you're speaking on terms of being honest and trustworthy, I don't think religion would play a role. People are people. They are who they are. It just depends on their character.
But, if you're talking on terms of religious beliefs, I can't say really who I distrust more because Christians believe in God and they believe in certain things that Muslims don't believe in and then there's atheists who believe in nothing, so it's kind of hard to say who to distrust more or less because they're very different beliefs.

Personally, I distrust those who have shown themselves unworthy of trust, no matter what their belief about God. I've known many honorable Christians and honorable atheists--and I've know scoundrels from both groups--but it was their actions that betrayed their nature rather than what they espoused to believe-or not believe.

We trust or distrust a man not based on the labels he bears, especially not on labels people place on him.
When we decide to trust a man, we must see whether he is pure, kindly and knowledgeable. If he is deprived of these qualities, he may cheat us, abuse us or lead us into traps. Yes, each man is trusted based on his own characters.

I would say atheists even though they are still to be hated.
Nobel Quran, Sura Al-Mâ'idah (5), verse 51,
"O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliyâ' (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but Auliyâ' to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliyâ', then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allâh guides not those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrongdoers and unjust)."

It depends on the person, you can't judge all because of one or some. Just like ppl mis-judge muslims.
