I really want to learn Icelandic. I've developed a random, odd fascination with all things Icelandic-I think the language, island, music, and the people are all so beautiful. Is anyone out there icelandic? How hard is the language to pick up? Is it expensive to travel there? Are the people welcoming? Are the teach-yourself books worthless?? How long does it take to learn on average???

Thanks!

I do not speak Icelandic myself, however I had met people from Iceland, and have been exposed to their language a little bit.

Icelandic people might not seem too warm at first to the stranger, but once you have become friends with them you’ll really love them.

There is no language in the world people would not be able to learn. Fascination to a certain language is always a good start to learn it, and is always a big plus for success. Icelandic is not that hard one might think. You can try to learn on your own by using teach-yourself books. It might be a good start. But it’s always better to have a teacher or to be immerged into a language.

You can research ticket prices to Iceland by using usual research engines like yahoo or Orbitz. You might be able to find good deals depending on the time of the year.

I consider myself Icelandic, lived in Iceland from birth. It is a difficult language yes, with all the cases and different form of the words. It is also expensive to travel. I don't know of any self-learning books, but there are probably something that exists. The people are very welcoming and willing to help. If you greet someone on the street they will greet you without any weirdness. If you live in the country it doesn't take that long to learn average, it depends on how much you are willing to do. If you work hard it shouldn't take too long. I have foreign friends who live here and some don't speak good though they have lived here for over 10 years but other speak very good Icelandic.

How come that you like Icelandic that much? Any specific reason?
