The best food is one that doesn't contain corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp or by products. Pugs are noted for skin conditions and corn/wheat are high allergens..they can make such problems worse and even cause problems. Also corn, wheat & soy offer very little by way of nutrition for dogs.Soy produces excess gas and corn & soy have been implicated in causing unexplained seizures in dogs. beet pulp offers no nutritional value at all and only adds unnecassary sugars to the diet. Also corn, wheat, soy & beet pulp are carbohydrates and can cause dogs to become overweight. Dogs are carnivores, meat eaters, they are not designed to extract proper nutrition from grains. They need a good quality meat based food. It takes up to 3 times more of a grain based food for a dog to get proper nutrition as it does a good quality meat based food. Grain based foods also produce more stool.
Steer away from foods such as Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba, Pedigree, Purina and other grocery store brands..they are loaded with cheap fillers, by products and some even contain dyes and chemical preservatives.
Some good quality meat based foods are...Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Solid Gold, Innova, Timberwolf,Blue Buffalo, Merrick, Fromm, Premium Edge, Percise just to name a few.

How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100:

1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal Or fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first Five ingredients (I.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer's rice", "rice Flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 Meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 Points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is Allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points

8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the First one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are Pesticide-free, add 1 point

94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D 69 = F

I have a 11 wk pit bull and you have to look at the ingredients on the food if the main ingredient start out with corn, wheat, flour or some type of bye product that's like giving him White Castle. The first ingredient should be some sort of meat or broth even for dry food. I give my puppy Eukanuba puppy chiots bites with gravy,it comes in a fresh 5oz pouch for about 89cents (real meat) for puppies and I put it over a small hand full of Purina beniful puppy chow which is a dry,to make it more tasteful & filling .The purina beniful is also a premium brand but its about $9 cheaper in the 30pnd bag but still a great puppy chow.Trust me dogs like to leave dry food in the bowl but with this recipe he will lick the bowl clean!! If you don't like loose doo-doo don't give him a lot of artificals.Eukanuba has alot of real meat products. The web site to Eukanuba is beyond great they send you health info, coupons and answer questions you may have on the net and has a 800 number too. Good Luck!

Buy a dog food made with *human grade* meat. Examples are:

Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Aunt Jenny's Homemade, Prairie, Natural Balance.

There are many more..but the key is that they are made with human grade meat. These brands will tell you openly it is made with human grade or USDA recomended meat.

Don't use any of the crap you see in TV commercials....they are made out of diseased and rotting carcasses, unfit for consumption.

Not to mention pets that are Euthanized...including the drugs used to put them down, fur, collars, and all.

Examples of unhealthy dog foods:

Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, Puppy Chow, Hills Science diet, Nutro....I can go on and on.

Go to amazon.com.....and get the book *Foods that Pets Die for*...It is an easy read....and explains what those so called *natural and balanced* dog food are made out of.

You will want to puke.......

I wouldn't feed that crap to my worst enemy....much less my best friend.

avoid "commercial" brand diets that are processed and have by-products and preservatives (eukanuba included).
A natural brand is better, preferably organic.
If you also feed a "raw diet" you want one where teh bones are ground down so they do not get one lodged (as in some raw diets that have whole bones). The raw diets are healthy but best if you buy them FROZEN- so that any bugs that could harm are killed by the freezing method. research the raw diet online
