I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are being sincere in knowing nothing about Christianity.
The "cross" or t as you say, represents the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Crucified means nailed hand and foot to a cross. Jesus died that way - but rose again after 3 days in the grave with the promise of salvation for those who believed in him.

The Encyclopædia Britannica, 11th Edition, Volume 7, says: “Various objects, dating from periods long anterior to the Christian era, have been found, marked with crosses of different designs, in almost every part of the old world. India, Syria, Persia

The Encyclopœdia Britannica, “the cross was a pagan symbol of life borrowed by the Christians and interpreted in the pagan manner.” The unchristian cross has no place in Christian worship.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame; and I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, has wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above to bear it to dark Calvary.

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, a wondrous beauty I see; for twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died to pardon and sanctify me.

Because their savior was crucified on two pieces of wood that looks like a t because the people wanted to nail him up on something and cleverly came up with nailing two boards together one for this hands and the other so it will stand up in the ground and so they can nail his feet down.

They call it a cross. because two board are crossed together. Simple isn't it?

It is a cross - it represents the cross that Jesus Christ died on. Christians are followers of Jesus Christ who was crucified on the cross, died and rose from the dead 3 day later. He came as a willing sacrifice to die for us & redeem us from sin & death. One must acknowledge, first, that they are a sinner and in need of a Savior. Whoever believes on His name to save them & receives Him into their hearts will be forgiven & will have eternal life.
