If he was sold to you as a purebred labrador retriever, he probably is. While they are generally solid colors, there are plenty of purebred labs that are more than one color...patches/spots, brindling, and even black&tans...mismarked dogs just won't do well in the conformation ring. :)

The white mark is perfectly fine for a full-blooded lab. Here's a quote from the AKC's labrador retriever breed standard page:

"The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is a disqualification. A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable. White hairs from aging or scarring are not to be misinterpreted as brindling."

Pure bred labs do sometimes have white markings on their chest. The AKC breed standard for the lab states " A small white spot on the chest is permissible, but not desirable."

I am not sure about the chocolate lab. I have a 3 yr old chocolate lab and he is all brown, BUT I have a 5 month old FOX RED lab (AKC recognized as yellow) with white spots on her back and I checked with the AKC and they are known as "Angel Wings".

Maybe or maybe not. White markings on the feet or chest sometimes shoe up in purebred Labradors. Such marks are a disqualification for show, so these pups are typically sold cheap as pets. The only way to know whether the dog is actually purebred is to check its papers, and even that isn't certain.

yes he is. AKC says that the only spots permitted on the labrador retriever for him to qualify as a purebred lab is a small white mark on his chest. No other white marks are permitted. Try to find the book "What About? Labrador Retrievers" by Karla Rugh, DVM, PhD

Quite possible, I believe that it is acceptable to the AKC for a pure bred lab to have a white patch on their chest.
