I learned that the best way to get a dog to learn is to teach the command 3 times in a row 3 times a day. Once you learn the basics you can do the rest yourself. Pick up a dog training book at the pet store. It's cheaper than classes.

I live in St. Louis, so it depends on where you live and what your expectations are. One lady said that she would come out and evaluate my home for 3 hours and charge $60! Then, she would decide what was best for my dog. She insisted I needed her help immediately (I never called her back!). The next was much more reasonable... $10 an hour for 10 sessions, but that didn't help with housebreaking or any other problem. It only helped show how to get the dog to do tricks. Or, you can try clicker, and I've heard a lot of people have had great success with that, and trainers often use it. It's got its own site, which I believe is clicker.com. Before you select one, get references and check them out. Also, call the Better Business Bureau and check them out. Ask pet shops, animal rescue groups and vets who they would recommend. The Humane Society sometimes holds obedience classes so check with yours. Petco also offers classes.

I only pay $50 for a 6 week obedience course with an excellent trainer, but I didn't find her in the yellow pages. She doesn't run a "facility" or rents a building. She is someone I found by contacting my local agility club and asking for references to good trainers. Even tho I'm persuing agility, you have to have obedience down pretty solid, so it was the first step. Anyway, contact a local obedience, agility or training club and ask for some references, they usually make excellent suggestions.
