Wow, what a bunch of sad answers. Not because they reflect anything but personal bias, but if this is the prevailing attitude, GM, Ford and Chrysler might as well close their doors today.

Someone bought a domestic vehicle 40 years ago, and hasn't bought one since. Talk about someone who does proper comparison shopping!

Some think that all Japanese cars are reliable, all domestics aren't. With such a polarized attitude, no wonder the country is in its current shape.

It may be true that domestics struggled during the 70s and 80s with quality, but so did imports. I have no answer why the perception is different, but I sold parts in a NAPA store and serviced all brands. One thing I can tell you is parts for imports were about 4x more expensive. It could be that more expensive parts means better qualilty, but at the time it would have been hard to get the average Chevy driver to spend $400 on an alternator.

Today GM offers a better warranty and has higher initial quality than Toyota or Honda, according to JD Power last summer (I honestly haven't seen these numbers since, they may have changed) Toyota has recently had the largest recall in automotive history and a whole series of them at that. Maybe that is because of it's growth, maybe they are finding the same problems GM has seen with such a large volume.

I heard that Motor Trend compared the Chevy Silverado to the new Toyota Tundra, and the Chevy came out on top. I haven't seen the article myself yet.

Reasonable people will see the progress and at least give GM a try, even if Ford is still having quality issues. But I suspect most of the posters before me are not reasonable if they read this and don't at least check on my assertations.

You could have put than into a question, such as, "Do you or don't you believe that drivers on the west cost should give American cars a fair try?"

But at any rate, I sort of agree with you. Yes, there have been some crappy american made cars. Yes, the brands of Toyota and Nissan have raised in quality, or lasted a long time. However, I believe that the quality in American made autos is reviving, getting better all the time. GM, Ford, and Chrysler are learning that if they want to stay afloat, they need to do better than they have been doing.

I use to sell cars and the domestic cars (Chevys, Chryslers & Fords) always had major problems with in the first few months. The Imports (Hondas, Nissans,Toyotas) hardly ever did. The import buyers would come back with a 5, 6 7 year old car and ask for a new model, pay the asking price and leave. The domestic owner would constantly switch from one domestic to the next until they finally got smart and went with the imports. You work hard for your money. You don't want to waste it on a car that's now with the bucks you get ripped off paying for it.

See Bachelor's answer above. He's the example I'm talking about.

It's the opposite. They're just out ahead of the rest of the country in rejecting the pitiful domestics and buying the best car for the money. It's spreading east - more imports than Detroit stuff in Nashville too. About time.

What? I do believe if you have a lifted silverado with huge exhaust, your daddy bought it for you. There's a difference in Ford Chevy. Left right. Red, Blue. Democrat, Rebublican.

Thats all i see.

i agree with your statement. i do believe that no one over here would even give a second though on test driving an american car. my parents are toyota/honda drivers, but when i can afford it, i plan on buying myself a chevy silverado.

They do, foreign just wins for reliability, hands down. Performance is also right up- there. Why by an american car anymore? they are all built in other countries.

I did, for forty years. Long enough? Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc. would have to give me one to "possibly" change my mind. They put out nothing but crap in the 70's-80's.
