He was illegally tried, the Jews were not supposed to have trials during that time and he was illegally convicted for the Jewish leaders could not get any two witnesses to say the same thing against him. When He was taken to the Romans to be crucified they said that he clamed to be a King of the Jews a crime for which the sentance was death. When the Roman ruler said that he found no fault in Christ the jewish leaders assembled said to crucify him anyway. so there was no "OFFICIAL" reason that Christ was crucified for either by Jewish or Roman law the reason that they told the Romans was written above his head "King of the Jews"

He claimed to be king of the Jews at a time when Rome was appointing the king. Jesus would have been tried for sedition. He had to have known the punishment for claiming the throne.

Actually, he was found guilty of treason because they say he claimed to be the king of the Jews, and claiming to be the king of a nation under Roman rule was considered a form of treason.

The official Roman crime was that Jesus said He was King of the Jews.
This crime was manufactured by the Jewish leaders, who wanted Him killed because He claimed to be Messiah. Because of that, they considered Him to be a blasphemer, and according to the old Mosaic law, a blasphemer must be put to death.
The real reason He was put to death was that it was God's plan for Him to be sacrificed as the perfect Lamb of God, to take away the sin of the world.

actually there was no official charge. the Pharisees just wanted to get rid of him the most convenient way possible. it was the idea of Pontius Pilate to make the ENRI. Remember that Pilate said he found no fault in him? the pharisees played the loyalty to the Emporer card and that was what did it. there was no official charge.
