What will the price range be if I restored my 1966 mustang Coupe Shell? The car is a complete shell with old paint on it. I have no Idea on how much it would cost if they stripped my car to bare metal and the painted it raven black or viper blue. My car is 95% rust free and I need a idea on how much it would cost. Thanks for everybody that helped me out

There are A LOT of variables here and it will all depend on what is under the current paint. A huge chunk of change will be body work so it will depend on how straight the body is under the current paint job. It may look straight but there could be bondo under the paint that makes it look straighter than it really is. Also, does any sheet metal need to be replaced due to rust? If so that will add up quickly. Raven black is a great color but for someone to paint your 66 that color it will cost considerably more than a lighter color. The body work on a black car has to be PERFECT for it to look right (you can see any little dent or ripple in black cars). So if you decide to stick with black, plan on extra $ for perfect body work. To bounce a number off of you and attempt to answer your question: My 65 had 2 dents and a few very small holes to be filled and pretty much zero rust, I had stripped a good part of the car to the metal and then shot it with etching primer.....the price for the body work, white paint with blue stripes, and to shoot spray in bedliner in the entire inside of the car was $4460. Again, this is with VERY little body work needed.

The end result is that you can get your car painted for $1000 or you can get your car painted for $10,000 and anywhere in between, it just depends on what you want out of it.

The coupe is about the least desirable of the mustangs. The fastbacks and the convertibles garner the most money. Hopefully it will be a "K" code car with the HO289 engine. I doubt if it will though. Do a search on mustang sites and you will find people that know these things inside and out. Do get the VIN number and have it decoded. That can tell you a lot about the car and what it originally had in it. The dollar value of it will depend on its condition, and I take it that you haven't seen it yet? Does it run now? Have some one knowledgeable to assist you with the purchase. You may find someone from a local Mustang club that would be willing to help you, with the pricing, and with the restoration or at least be able to tell you who to call that does good work. Have deep pockets, by the way. good luck with it.

Well if you strip to bare metal, you will need to do a LOT more work. Stripping to bare metal would cause to need to treat the metal and use an etch primer throughtout the body - paint or regualr primer will not stick to the bare metal. You then will need a primer and then a sealer - of course after all body work is complete.

You then will need to paint the car. You can chose a mid range paint with a 1:1 reduction (PPG's DBC or DBU or DuPont's Chromabase) and then a clear coat. You do not need to, but you can use any brand. May I Suggest, PPG DC3000 with a DCH hardner (depending temperture).

Also you will want a jamming clear for all the door jams, under the hood and the trunk.

If I was to estimate the total cost in PAINTR PRODUCTS ONLY, I would say in the range of $1,000 or a complete and decent product. BTW, the blue is more expensive then the black.

This does not include sandpaper, buffing and compounding etc!!

ooooof. if your painting it to sell it. I wouldn't do anything and auction it. But if you want it for a show car. Restore the old paint. Do what you can do. If your wanting to drive around the city, or have it as a project car, then go ahead and paint it. Cost? Depends, $1000 perhaps. Just painting it, not buffing, sanding etc.
