They are peaceful ways of preventing harm either to ones self or another who is trying to harm you. An example if you came at me
with a knife or gun would it be better for me to shoot you with my gun or use my martial arts skill to disarm you saving one or both our lives

Buddhist invented martial art not as a weapon to attack anyone but it is just a way to stay healthy and to defend themselves while in desperate time. During the ancient time, people living in a more harsh environment such as jungles or on the mountains and etc so that a well built body would be an advantage to survive in these environment. Moreover, Buddhism teach people about controlling your mind and ultimately free itself from all the outside influence that makes you bind to this shell. So the training of martial art is actually one of the method to enhance your personal determination and will ( such as endurance and discipline ) so it might be helpful in other practice such as meditation or etc. Martial art includes kung fu, breathing techniques, endurance and so much more. So, why do people think Buddhist is peaceful ? The answer is because they understand like I do.

Rubbish.
You are right on two points, but the monk who invented kung-fu lived in the mountains and was tired of being beaten up by robbers when he went into tow. He spent 9yrs teaching himself a series of moves in the form of gymnastics so he could defend himself on the tracks leading to town.
I would rather be beaten by a kung-fu exponent than an untrained thug.
The art of kung fu is soft unlike karate, and steeped in grace, meditation, and discipline.
It is my belief that such is the violent nature of man that kung fu is more of a deterent to violence than a catalyst.
Unfortunately with its growth comes many unworthy people who learn the arts but are unworthy of the learning.
That is human nature not kung-fu

The martial arts they used are for defense only.
Most martial arts were invented to protect those who were defenseless already.
Look to most weapons. Sure there is the sword, but look at the staff, the nunchucka, the kama (small, hand-held cicle). These were farming tools that the poor used to defende themselves from those with swords and spears.

When warlords prevent you from carrying weapons you have to have some form of self defense.
Christians and Muslims have boatloads of wars to their credit. The Buddhists have NONE!
Just because you can fight it doesn't make you warlike.
All women are equipped to be prostitutes, but only a small percentage of them engage it that business.

Are you trying to say that Buddhists are the one's that invented hand to hand combat? wow, dude. Way too much TV. Unarmed combat has been around long before humans. It was originally known as hunting.

I'd be willing to bet that violence has been around a LOT longer than any organized religion.
