I actually disagree with you somewhat. I think that as soon as you find an answer that completely answers your question, then that should be the best answer. By doing this you are rewarding the answerer for their promptness. It even says when you receive the email telling you that you have received an answer, that if this answer satisfies the question, then just go ahead and choose it as the best.
If however, none of the answers fully answer the question, then yes I would read all of the answers and choose what I thought was the best one.

Yes, I think they should, it is the polite thing to do. Especially after someone has taken the time to answer! I read every answer, though admittedly, I have not gotten a huge response to any of my questions. Even Help! I can't make gravy got a poor showing, LOL.
If the asker did not want a lot of answers, why ask the question here? Go to wikapeadia, or on the net, and get the answer!
I get frustrated with people who say they do not read the long answers. They usually have the most info in them, and I for one enjoy someone's personal story!
I know, it's a free country, and there are no rules about reading answers here. But why waste your points if you are not being serious?
Some great examples was the person who clearly said they did not want any dirty answers, then picked a really dirty one as the best answer! It was the second answer. Another picked the second answer as the best, it said something to the effect of Ohyeh, great. It had a picture of obviously male model, and a guy name. she was literally cooing over his response, and there were several really good answers.
So, not everyone is here to get info, or even pay attention to it when they get it. Some are here instead of being in the I want love section, and some are here to talk dirty.
Oh, well it takes all kinds.
OOps, I went above and beyond what you asked, some answerers will not be reading this response. But in my own defense, and others, some people take their answers seriously, and wish to give the asker the benefit of all their knowlege on the subject.

I don't know who would know if an asker read every answer they received or if it could even be tracked. This would make it difficult to have an asker obligated to read every one.
I agree that if someone took the time to really write a response to a question that required more depth than other answers, the asker should take the time to read all of them before choosing the best response. I'm sure most asker's do read them all when they have asked these types of questions.

Yes i think you are obligated to read all before chosing the best response. Funny i should see this question right after reading the question about the "23 enigma", the last time i looked there were 384 responses, imagine having to read all before choosing!

Perhaps the Asker is not legally obligated, but morally required to at least pretend he/she is giving each answer fair consideration. However, it can sometimes be very difficult to follow the answer. Example:
If you received this answer in error please notify the author Zelda immediately. (by email) The confidential nature of and/or privilege in the answer here given is not waived or lost as a result of a mistake or error in this file. Zelda accepts no liability whatsoever, whether it was caused by:
1. Accessing or other related actions to this file.
2. Any links, and/or materials provided/attached to this file.
Zelda assumes that all users understand the risks involved within this file and/or its attached materials, and does not hold you responsible if you do not read her full answer.

You are taking this way too seriously. There is always freedom of choice, except for paying taxes. If an answer is super long realistically it is not going to be read, people don't want to spend the time. But that is nice that you really put your heart into it.
Keep up the good answers and I bet you will be helping a lot of people.

I think the asker should read the answers, or at least enough of each answer to know what it is about. Many people pick an answer from the top of the list while others provide more information or link to sites with background information.

I do read all of my answers, but if I ever come across an unusually long answer, I want read it because I have learned by reading some of the long answers that people sometimes go above and beyond what the question asks and I find that annoying.
